Fate's Fortress

No, I'm not a lonely, deranged, depressed maniac.

He was waiting for her at the corner of the road. She asked him to come and see her. She was late, and he was getting increasingly desperate to see her. He saw her finally, and his heart started beating faster. She saw him and smiled. He smiled back, although weakly.

He got up and moved to meet her. She took his hand and they started walking. She was so happy to be reunited with him, but he, he was numb. She spoke, she asked, she laughed, but he was mute. They continued walking, relishing the few minutes they had together before they left.

His emotions failed him. He wasn’t happy, he wasn’t sad. He didn’t know why. Maybe he wasn’t happy because it was probably the last time he would see her. Maybe he wasn’t sad because she wouldn’t let him be. There was just this hollow feeling in his heart. He held on to her tightly. He wanted to hug her, kiss her, never let go.

The minutes passed sooner than they expected. They had reached the end of the road. They had to part now. She had to go, she told him. He remained silent. He took her in his arms for one last time, and kissed her. The connection broke, she turned, and walked away. He told her he loved her, she told him she loved him.

He began walking home, so slowly, so dejectedly. He walked a few steps, then turned back, but he couldn’t see her, she was gone. He walked some more, then turned back again. There she was, waiting. She waved a final good-bye. He waved back, and they went home.

He sat in his room, and that’s when his emotions returned. The hollow feeling was now replaced by a feeling of longing. How he missed her. How he wanted her back. How he wanted to feel her skin, to see her smile.

He reminisced a while longer, and went to sleep.
